Speaking of the 4th of July

Cupcakes for July 4th 2009

A blast from the past....

This cake is far from a professional one but I did it & I am very proud of this one!! It was the start of my creativity with baking!! This cake was made for the 4th of July 2005

Sponge Bob

This cake I made for my niece Hannah!! They love confetti cake so I just buy sprinkles & make it myself!! I got a bit carried away & it did make decorating him a bit hard because I couldn't see where everything was suppose to go!!

I think it came out ok!! This cake was a pain because I forgot to soften the yellow icing so I was constantly having to stop due to hand cramping!! Sure I could have added some water to make it easy to work with but I already put it all in the bag & I guess I was just being lazy!! lol

The next cake I made is one of the reasons why the blogs halted!! I was trying to find this & for another one I made for my other niece Emily!! Unfortunately I think it was on my laptop & my daughter did something to it so now I can't find any of my files!! UGH!!! So unless my husband can recover my files for me...that cake is lost forever!! Though it's definitely not my finest work!! I will post it the moment it is found!!!

My first character cake!

This was my first character cake...actually this was my first cake I made after I was done with all 3 classes!! My niece's birthday's were around the corner & the first one to have a birthday was Madison!! She was turning 3 at that time & she was REALLLLLY into Dora!! This type of decorating seemed easy enough but it was anything but!!

Smoothing around the outer parts were what was easy!!
It was filling everything in that was the hard part!! Especially since a good part of her face was taken off when taken out of the pan!! Plus the paper they give you as a guide is a mirror image so it's all backwards!!

I managed to get it put together & she LOVED it!! I also got her the candle too!!

Course 3 cakes

So THIS is the reason I endured the last class!! I've been wanting to use fondant so this was the class I was waiting for!! Boy oh boy...I was in for a surprise!! It looks so easy on TV when you watch the cake shows but this was ANYTHING but easy!! I was suppose to make a wedding like cake like this one
But the fondant roses were kicking my butt so I decided to keep trying but have a back up cake if it didn't work out!!! So obviously they didn't work out & this was the cake I did instead! This cake was a lot more fun because I wasn't cursing at the flowers!! I guess flower making is not really my thing but I got what I really wanted out of this class...which was pretty much how to work with fondant!

This cake was the first cake we did for course 3!! Not too bad for my first time with fondant!!

Course 2 cake

So in course 2 we only made one cake which made my day since we did this course right after the first one!! So you're probably wondering what we did since we didn't make cakes every week...well we spent the entire class making royal icing flowers!! We also took a little time in those 4 weeks to learn the basket weave & the rope border!! So this was the only cake we made using the basket weave & rope border technique & putting the flowers we made on it!! This class was not my favorite!! Making all those flowers got really boring & I hated doing them!! Though I had to complete this one to get to the next one which is the one I really wanted to go to!!

Course 1 cakes

These cakes were all made for course 1 of the Wilton decorating class!! The rainbow cake I sent to my daughter's class & I wanted to practice piping letters so that is why it's got the teacher's name on it! We had to do the clowns for the class & had no idea what to do with the cake but again...to practice piping letters I just wrote something random!! The rose cake was the very last cake we did!! For me the rose making was not too easy & I would probably have issues making them now!! I'm left handed & since the instructor was a right handed person like every other person in the world...it was hard for her to teach me the proper way!! I learn by example & by doing! Though I did get them made & they looked great...I had to figure it out pretty much by myself! I would have to practice a bunch to do them again!
By the end of this course...I really didn't want to see another cake again but I pressed on with my neighbor, her mom & one of her friends!! Plus we were told in course 2 we only made 1 cake!
